“2018 was an amazing year for English wine – and our Sparkling wine was tasting phenomenal,” says Will Boscawen, founder and director of Mereworth Wines. “It wasn’t going to wait,” he adds. With a few signs placed on the footpath in the vineyard close to King’s Hill, they started to get the word out. They also went one step further. They’ve also brought out some small batch Gin, Ciders, and even some beers.
“We’ve kept this really small. We have had to be extremely creative using what we have, but it has been SO SO positive. It has given us the chance to re-connect with our local audience. Thankfully we had licences in place that allowed us to do this, and praise be to the authorities for allowing drinks producers to continue working, but we’ve been able to go back to basics; producing exceptional artisanal drinks for our customers.”
Conveniently positioned between Maidstone and Tonbridge, and a mere stone’s throw from West Malling and Kings Hill, the team at Mereworth Wines felt it only right to keep their customers suitably refreshed in the downturn. By bringing out an abridged website, offering click and collect and delivery, they’ve discovered a wave of goodwill amongst their local audience. Some of whom didn’t even know they lived beside an award-winning winery. They’ve also thrown into the mix the option of delivering Teston Bakery’s unbelievably delicious bread to local customers.
“It’s really about adapting,” Will notes. “Of course our labels and website aren’t yet as finessed as we would like, but I think people understand that right now. As a great mentor once said, ‘you don’t comb your hair when your arse is on fire…’. Our attention has gone completely into what is in the bottle – and we’re incredibly proud of what we have produced.”
